Zirconium Crowns or Laminate Veneers?

May 25, 2026

Two different solutions

Both improve the appearance of front teeth, but they are not interchangeable. A laminate veneer is a thin porcelain shell bonded to the front surface only. A zirconium crown covers the entire tooth.

How much tooth is removed

This is the key difference. Veneers require minimal preparation — often just half a millimetre from the front surface, and in some cases none at all. Crowns require the tooth to be reduced on all sides, which is a far more significant and irreversible step.

Which suits which case

Veneers are ideal for healthy teeth with cosmetic issues: mild crowding, small gaps, chips or stubborn discolouration. Crowns are the right answer when a tooth is already heavily filled, has had root canal treatment, or is fractured — situations where the remaining tooth needs full coverage for strength.

Durability and cost

Both last well — commonly ten to fifteen years or more with good hygiene. Zirconium is the stronger material and is preferred for back teeth and for patients who grind. Veneers are usually the more conservative choice for front teeth, and cost is broadly comparable, so the decision should be driven by the condition of the tooth rather than by price.
