Teeth whitening is one of the aesthetic treatments we are asked about most. Many of our patients in Eyüpsultan, Istanbul arrive without knowing which method suits them. Here we compare the two main approaches impartially.
First, a Requirement: A Healthy Mouth
Whichever method is chosen, the mouth must be healthy before whitening. Untreated decay, a leaking filling or inflamed gums will make the process genuinely uncomfortable. An examination and, where needed, a professional clean are therefore an integral part of the treatment rather than a formality to be skipped.
It is also important to know from the outset that whitening only works on natural tooth structure. Crowns, fillings and porcelain restorations do not change colour.
In-Clinic Whitening
This is carried out at the clinic under direct supervision. The gums are isolated with a protective barrier, then a high-concentration gel is applied and activated with light where indicated.
Advantages: A clearly visible result in a single session of around an hour. It is the most practical route if you are working towards a particular date, such as a wedding or an important meeting. Because the procedure is supervised throughout, gum safety is at its highest.
Disadvantages: The higher concentration can make post-treatment cold sensitivity more noticeable. This settles on its own within a few days.
Home Whitening
Custom trays are made from impressions of your mouth. A lower-concentration gel is applied in the trays and worn for a few hours a day, or overnight, for two to three weeks.
Advantages: Because the change is gradual, sensitivity is usually less pronounced. The trays can also be kept and reused for short top-up courses later. It suits patients who prefer to proceed at their own pace.
Disadvantages: The result emerges over several weeks and depends on consistent use. If wear is irregular, the outcome may fall short of expectations.
The Combined Approach
Our clinical experience is that the most stable results come from combining the two: an in-clinic session first to achieve a clear change, then home whitening to consolidate it. We generally recommend this route to patients who want both a rapid result and longevity.
What About Products Sold Online?
Unregulated whitening products at inappropriate concentrations can cause gum burns and uneven lightening. Standard one-size trays sit against the gums, so gel ending up where it should not is a common problem. We do not recommend these products; whitening looks simple but requires professional supervision.
How Long Do Results Last?
Whitening is not permanent but it is long-lasting, with most patients retaining the result for one to two years. Coffee, tea, cola, red wine and tobacco are the main factors that shorten it.
To extend your result: rinse with water after strongly coloured drinks, use a straw where practical, avoid smoking and keep up your six-monthly professional cleaning. Many of our patients maintain their result with a short home top-up course every year or two.
To find out which method suits you, patients in Eyüpsultan and the wider Eyüp area are welcome to book a consultation at our clinic.
